Japan is a densely populated country the same size as the state of California, with half the total population of the US ( 120 million ).

And in light of the fact that Japan is a mountainous country, it is not surprising that only 27 % of its total area is suitable for people to comfortably live on . So it is certainly true that Japan can be a crowded place .

Up until recently, commuting to the Tokyo metropolitan area was often a tremendous chore. Despite the trains and subways nearly always running on time, the number of people packed into them could turn a commute to or from the city into quite an unpleasant ride. Although the situation has gotten relatively better, commuter trains are still crowded during busy times such as the rush hour. And one place that always seems busy is Tokyo's Shinjuku Station, which sees 3,640,000 people go through it daily the record for any train station the world over .
